Sirocco ft. Abel Selaocoe \u0026 Chesaba is a show of pure energy and joy – a great, swirling storm celebrating musical traditions from across the globe.
We’re excited to announce the online premiere of this heart-warming musical journey, concluding our isolation broadcast series with a big, loud (djembe) bang!
Told through the lens of South African cellist Abel Selaocoe, Sirocco is about belonging. It’s music by the people, for the people. Abel is joined by his band Chesaba and by Manchester Collective to play everything from beloved classics by Stravinsky and Haydn, to a set of remarkable African tunes and Scandinavian folk songs.

Sirocco: Ka Bohaleng | Abel Selaocoe with Manchester Collective & Chesaba
Genre-defying cellist Abel Selaocoe is joined by his band Chesaba and the Manchester Collective string players in this electrifying take on a traditional South African song. Its title, ‘Ka Bohaleng’ (On The Sharp Side) references a common saying that “a woman holds a knife on the sharp end”. The song is a dedication to all mothers, and the women who take care of us through times of hardship.

Sirocco: Shaka | Sidiki Dembélé with Manchester Collective & Chesaba
Hands up for the amazing Sidiki Dembélé, a true master of his craft. This song for the n’goni and calabash (traditional African instruments) was written in dedication to his grandfather, who was the chief griot for the Ivory Coast. Sidiki is joined by the Manchester Collective string quartet, who built upon the tune’s foundations through improvisation and playing together.
